MISSION STATEMENT

BYLAWS*

The Snowbasin Alpine Team is the racing organization of the Snowbasin Ski Education Foundation (SSEF); a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of young ski racers. The Alpine Team provides a fun, yet challenging way for young men and women to improve their skiing and to develop skills and discipline that will provide lifelong enjoyment of an active outdoor life.

SNOWBASIN SKI EDUCATION FOUNDATION AND THE SNOWBASIN ALPINE TEAM

Snowbasin has a long and well known ski racing heritage. It began in the 1940's when Earl Miller started the Utah Racing School. Today, the Snowbasin Alpine Team consists of more than seventy racers of various skiing abilities and is open to interested skiers ages six to twenty. The Snowbasin Alpine Team is made up of three teams - the Developmental (DEVO) Team, the Developmental Elite (DEVO ELITE) and the RACE Team. These teams provide young racers a natural progression of increased competition as their abilities and skills improve. The individual racers are assigned to a team based on their ability and skills and advancement is dependent on each individual racer's progression and improvement.

The principal purpose of SSEF is to organize, operate and maintain programs, such as the Snowbasin Alpine Team, for the instruction, training and coaching of junior racers and provide an opportunity for them to participate in skiing competition to the fullest extent consistent with their respective skill levels and physical condition. The SSEF has great plans for the future of the Snowbasin Alpine Team. The 2002 Olympic Winter Games increased the local community's awareness of alpine ski racing. The SSEF is committed to helping Utah continue the ongoing Legacy through the development of future Olympians.

COACHING

Ray Miller and his staff of professional coaches are dedicated to the development of young skiers, not only as a racers, but as an individuals. The latest coaching techniques, rooted in fundamentals and racing tactics, create just the right atmosphere for young ski racers to excel. By emphasizing the positive, our coaches inspire racers to set and attain goals and create a positive attitude toward learning. By maintaining a low coach/racer ratio, we are able to provide individualized instruction with constant feedback through the use of two-way radios, timing devices, video analysis and coaches evaluations while training. These techniques have proven effective with racers of varying abilities.

We have more than a dozen coaches; all are either certified as instructors in the Professional Ski Instructors Association (PSIA) and/or certified as coaches in the United States Coaches Association (USCA) and all are licensed by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA). Our coaches truly love the sport of skiing and receive great satisfaction in sharing this love with young racers. Their commitment instills a sense of pride and inspires confidence which assures success not only in racing, but in all aspects of life.

SAFETY

Safety of the racers is one of our primary considerations and is an inherent part of our training. Our coaches promote safety awareness in all aspects of alpine skiing and racing, whether free skiing, training with gates or an actual race. The racers are taught mountain courtesy and rules and learn how to safely use their bodies in harmony with their equipment to develop natural and efficient skiing techniques.

BASIC PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Snowbasin Alpine Team is a racing program; consequently, a potential Team member must possess basic ski skills before becoming a member of the Team. Specifically, an interested skier:

If you, as a parent, are unsure as to your young racer's abilities, you may have our coaches evaluate their skiing ability prior to joining the Team. Most new racers begin on the Developmental (DEVO) Team. There are a few exceptions based on age and skiing ability, although they are on a case-by-case basis.
